Share for Viewing

Sharing for viewing means sending view-only scores to someone. The format sent to the recipient can be a link, photo, PDF, or Excel spreadsheet. Each method is slightly different, but they are all similar in two ways: (1) the recipient does not need the HotClays app to view their scores, and (2) the recipient cannot add or edit scores. This contrasts with sharing for scoring, described in the previous section, for which both (1) and (2) are the opposite. This section describes how to share for viewing using each of the four methods: link, photo, PDF, and Excel spreadsheet.

Share by link means you send a link (URL) to someone, and they can click the link to view the scores on the HotClays website. The scores on the website update in real-time, so sharing by link can be used to create a live leaderboard: Just share by link, open the link, and you have live scores. One popular setup is to open the link on a computer whose screen is mirrored to a big-screen TV, turning the TV into a live leaderboard.

To share an event by link, first navigate to the Home tab. Locate the event you would like to share, then tap the event to open it. You will see two buttons in the top-right corner. Tap the button on the left, the share button. A list of sharing options will be shown — tap ‘Link.’ Wait for loading to complete, then choose a messaging app to send the link to the recipient.

Share by Photo, PDF, or Excel

Sharing by photo, PDF, or Excel spreadsheet means you export the scorecard to a file, then send the file to someone. When you share by photo or PDF, the exported file has the look of a traditional scorecard — a grid with names, /’s, and O’s. Sharing an Excel spreadsheet gives a more detailed output, because it is meant primarily for archives and external processing (e.g. uploading to a league website or creating your own custom statistics).

To share by photo, PDF, or Excel, first navigate to the Home tab. Locate the event you would like to share, then tap the event to open it. You will see two buttons in the top-right corner. Tap the button on the left, the share button. A list of sharing options will be shown — tap the format you’d like to export (photo, PDF, or Excel). (Note: PDF and Excel are only available to Premium account holders). When loading has finished, choose any messaging app to send the exported file to the recipient.
